Models for Interacting Populations of Memes: Competition and Niche Behavior

چکیده

We make use of a set of text analysis tools, primarily based on Latent Semantic Indexing, to study the dynamics of memes on the Net. Our analysis discovers replicating memes within posts to the USENET News (or NetNews) system. We cluster the posts to NetNews into clouds within a conceptual sequence space; these clusters describe quasispecies. We then go on to study the pairwise interactions between these quasi-species by computing the cross-correlation between the interacting population’s level of post activity. We analyze a particular corpus of posts to the soc.women newsgroup and argue that strong negative crosscorrelations are examples of competition between the quasi-species. We find that high levels of competition occur more frequently among quasi-species who exist within a narrow ecological niche. We note that this phenomena also occurs in natural ecologies.

Intraspecific competition reduces niche width in experimental populations

Intraspecific competition is believed to drive niche expansion, because otherwise suboptimal resources can provide a refuge from competition for preferred resources. Competitive niche expansion is well supported by empirical observations, experiments, and theory, and is often invoked to explain phenotypic diversification within populations, some forms of speciation, and adaptive radiation. Howe...

Competition and Success in the Meme Pool: A Case Study on Quickmeme.com

The advent of social media has provided data and insights about how people relate to information and culture. While information is composed by bits and its fundamental building bricks are relatively well understood, the same cannot be said for culture. The fundamental cultural unit has been defined as a “meme”. Memes are defined in literature as specific fundamental cultural traits, that are fl...

Fixed point sensitivity analysis of interacting structured populations.

Sensitivity analysis of structured populations is a useful tool in population ecology. Historically, methodological development of sensitivity analysis has focused on the sensitivity of eigenvalues in linear matrix models, and on single populations. More recently there have been extensions to the sensitivity of nonlinear models, and to communities of interacting populations. Here we derive a fu...

Effect of competition on niche dynamics of syntopic grazing ungulates: contrasting the predictions of habitat selection models using stable isotope analysis

Background: Theories of density-dependent habitat selection provide two solutions for co-existence of competing species. The niche compression hypothesis predicts that species reduce their respective niche breadths in response to inter-specific competition. Alternatively, if the species have similar resource preferences, the subordinate species may be forced to expand its niche to incorporate s...

Ecological Niche Modeling of Mountain Vipers from the Raddei Clade in Iran, Caucasus and Eastern Turkey

Mountain vipers of the genus Montivipera, generally, and the species of the Raddei clade, specifically, are interesting examples of species neo-endemism in Iran, Anatolia, and the Caucasus. Given the critical conservation status of these species, it is necessary to identify their suitable habitats for prioritizing conservation measures. We modeled ecological niche of each species based on four ...
